History
From President to Emperor
Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte was elected as the first President of the Second French Republic in 1848. Following in the footsteps of his famous uncle, he staged a coup in 1851 and declared himself Emperor Napoleon III, a title he held until overthrown in 1870, when the Third French Republic was established.
Napoleon III is perhaps best known today for doubling the size of the French overseas empire and promoting the building of the Suez Canal. Allied with Britain, he defeated Russia in the Crimean War. At home he undertook massive public works campaigns, modernized the French banking system, and established modern agriculture, which ended famines in France.
