The obverse side of the gold coin features Augustus Saint Gaudens’ timeless design of Lady Liberty, symbolizing enlightenment and progress. The design depicts Lady walking in a full stride, seemingly towards us, as she holds a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, the symbol of peace. The inscriptions surrounding the portrayal are “LIBERTY 1908” and stars. The edge of the coin displays the US motto, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” which stands for ‘Out of many, One.’
The reverse of the Gold $20 Saint Gaudens “No Motto” Coin showcases the majestic American bald eagle in flight as it soars in the sky above the rising sun. The sun’s rays take up the background of this design along with the imprints: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. TWENTY DOLLARS”.
Coins struck between 1907 and 1908 did not include the motto “In God We Trust,” as it was afterward incorporated.
The Story of Saint Gaudens’ Design!
President Theodore Roosevelt sanctioned the American sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens in his last years to create a new design for coins entering the twentieth century. Initially, the president asked Saint Gaudens not to include the motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” as the word “God” was inappropriate for a coin. Thus, the 1908 issue of the $20 Saint Gaudens Gold Coin was issued without the motto, becoming a rare collectible and investment-grade coin.
