The obverse of the coin is designed by George T. Morgan, and adopts the same name. This design includes the effigy of Lady Liberty modeled by Anna Willess Williams. In this effigy, the Lady gazes at the sky as a sign of freedom, while she wears a Phrygian cap with a decorated hair band that reads “LIBERTY”. The Obverse has inscriptions on the inner reeded edge as, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1896”.

The reverse side of the 1896 Morgan Silver Dollar bears the coat of arms of the United States of America that includes a heraldic eagle in the center with outstretched wings while it holds an olive branch and bundle of arrows in its talons that symbolizes peace and war. The portrayal of the eagle is supported by two wreaths below it tied together to hold the coat of arms together. The inscriptions on the coin are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” “ONE DOLLAR” and the motto of the US “In God we trust”.
