A total of 13 stars encircles the effigy of Lady, representing the initial 13 colonies that united to form the United States of America. The top edge displays the US motto, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” that stands for “out of many, one”, which also has 13 letters, and the bottom reads, “1885”.
The reverse bears the coat of arms of the United States of America and has been redesigned eight times since 1782. The design displays the national symbol of America, the American bald eagle, holding an olive branch in one of its talons and arrows in the other, which symbolizes peace and war in the United States. The reverse is also inscribed with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “ONE DOLLAR”, the US motto “In God we trust”, and the mint mark of the New Orleans facility (O).
