George T. Morgan designed the Morgan Dollar, and Lady Liberty’s effigy is modeled by Anna Willess Williams. The name Morgan Dollar was designated after George, the United States Mint’s Assistant Engraver. The obverse displays a left-profile effigy of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap and gazing at the sky elegantly with a decorated hair band that reads, “LIBERTY”. Along the inner reeded edge is the motto of the US, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” which stands for “out of many, one”, while the bottom is engraved with the year “1887”.

The reverse side includes the coat of arms of the United States of America, which depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings while holding an olive branch, symbolizing peace, and a bundle of arrows, symbolizing war, in its talons. The American bald eagle is the national symbol of America symbolizes strength, courage, and immortality. The reverse also includes the identifying marks of “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “ONE DOLLAR” and the motto, “In God we trust”.

The Morgan Dollar

One of the most iconic series, the Morgan Silver Dollar, has immense collectible value and carries the heritage and history of American coinage. The US Mint manufactures the coin in one of its six facilities. Thus, the mint mark differs based on the facility that struck the coin. For the 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar, the unavailability of the mint mark means that the coin was minted in Philadelphia.
